Age group and level of play will determine which type of fastpitch softball is legal and recommended to use. Younger players will use ball sizes from 10”-11” in diameter until they are around 12-14 years old when they will move to the full sized 12” softball. Fastpitch softballs will also vary in materials and composition depending on the age group and level of play. For example, youth softballs will not only be smaller, but typically use synthetic covers and a softer core to reduce the instance of injury from impact; whereas NFHS softballs will use leather covers and a harder core to mimic professional and collegiate softballs.
