There are several types of shoes that a baseball umpire might select to wear. The types of footwear include a training shoe, a turf shoe, or an actual shoe especially designed for the needs of an umpire. The training shoes are a good choice for umpires because they are designed to incorporate features to protect against the mechanical stresses imposed by the foot striking and moving sideways. Turf shoes are versatile and provide enough traction for the infield and but are still more comfortable than a full cleat. Lastly, umpire specific shoes are typically turf shoes that are all black and can contain extra protection for the foot. The plate shoes have a steel toe as well as a leather pad on the top on the foot to add protection from a wild pitch to offer protection for the umpire to safely make the right call.
