A number of factors are involved in choosing a baseball or softball glove. First and foremost, your position will determine the glove that is right for you. Gloves come in different shapes and sizes. For example, a pitcher's and infielder's gloves are typically smaller than an outfielder's glove. The first baseman's glove and catchers mitt are both uniquely designed for the specific needs of the positions.
Glove size is crucial. Be sure that Little League gloves fit your player's small hands. A glove that is too large will be hard to close and handle.
Webbing on gloves varies greatly and can affect a player's performance. Open web gloves are better at trapping the ball and are generally preferred by Outfielders, First Basemen and Third Basemen. Closed web gloves let you get the ball out of the mitt faster, so they are generally preferred by Shortstops and 2nd basemen who need to turn double plays easier.
Choosing Gloves and Mitts by Position:
Catchers Mitts are heavily padded and great for catching fastballs all game long.
First Basemen's Gloves are also heavily padded, but are longer since the first baseman must field balls all game long.
Infield Gloves are smaller so that the player can easily pull the ball out of the glove and throw it.
Outfielders Gloves are larger and longer and more suitable for catching fly balls.
